Case Study: Crown Highways – Protecting Teams Through Expertise, Partnership, and Arc Flash Education

Key summary

Customer name: Crown Highways
Location: Willenhall, West Midlands
Business sector: Civil engineering/utilities
Order details: Trousers, t-shirts, polo shirts, jackets, head liners and base layers

Business requirements: Required comfortable, fitted PPE for teams working on highways and infrastructure projects, which met safety standards and provided protection against Arc Flash and related incidents.

Overview

Crown Highways provides civil engineering, lighting and technology services on UK motorways, trunk roads and the local authority network.

In Willenhall, West Midlands, Crown Highways was appointed to support the delivery of a multi-million-pound cycle and pedestrian upgrade scheme connecting Wolverhampton and Walsall.

With 18 members of its team working on site in all weathers and conditions, Crown Highways was looking for protective wear which was not only comfortable, fitted and durable, but met the required safety standards in the event of incidents such as an Arc Flash.

Challenge

Crown Highways was looking for protective wear which was not only comfortable and fitted, but durable.

With teams working up to 12-hour shifts in sunshine, rain, snow and ice, PPE must be breathable and cool enough to wear in the warmer summer months, but also insulated enough for when temperatures plummet.

Durability was also a key challenge. Poor quality PPE can start to lose some of its protective qualities after a smaller number of washes, and can also shrink or fade over time.

Working on highways and across the UK road network, where power lines and electric equipment are situated, teams must also be protected in the event of an Arc Flash.

“For the whole team, comfort and fit is the big thing. We’re wearing this kit every day, working long shifts, and you need something you’re comfortable in.” Paul Trotter, Site Manager, Crown Highways.

Solution

Searching for protective wear that was not only comfortable but durable, Crown Highways chose ProGARM as its sole supplier of Arc Flash and Flame-Resistant garments, establishing a partnership that has now lasted six years.

Teams are equipped with jackets, trousers, t-shirts, polo shirts, base layers, and head liners. Looking ahead, Crown Highways is considering expanding their kit with sweatshirts and waterproof trousers.

Female team members have also found the PPE comfortable and well-fitting:

“As a woman, I’ve felt comfortable in the kit and the fit is great. It lasts longer than previous PPE, and knowing the guys are protected gives us peace of mind.” – Leah Burnett, SHE Advisor

Alongside supplying PPE, ProGARM prioritises education on Arc Flash risks. As the UK’s only manufacturer specialising entirely in Arc Flash and Flame-Resistant PPE, ProGARM sent National Key Account Manager Dan Cooper to Willenhall to deliver a hands-on training workshop.

The session focused on the risks of incidents within the utilities sector and explained how wearing the correct layers of PPE is essential for proper protection against Arc Flash.

“The presentation that Dan gave us on Arc Flash was fantastic, along with how ProGARM’s kit protects against incidents. The team learnt a lot from it, and the education piece around Arc Flash is really important. I would fully recommend ProGARM to anyone looking for Arc Flash and Flame-Resistant kit. It really is the best on the market.” – Paul Trotter, Crown Highways

ProGARM’s workshops and toolbox talks ensure that teams are not only equipped with the right kit but also the knowledge to stay safe on site.

“We value working closely with our partners to deliver toolbox talks and wider education around Arc Flash, increasing industry knowledge and using feedback to drive future product innovation. Through key engagements with partners like Crown Highways, we can continue our mission to keep people safe and protected, wherever they are working.” – Dan Cooper, ProGARM

Results

Over the years, ProGARM has given Crown Highways teams peace of mind that they have quality, durable kit which provides them with the protection they need against Arc Flash.

With a complete range of Arc Flash and Flame-Resistant garments, teams can work confidently and safely in a variety of locations, knowing in the rare event of an incident, they have the right PPE to protect them.

They also have PPE which looks great, is comfortable, and can be washed and reused more times than many competitors on the market.

You get some PPE where, after 10 or so washes, it’s already starting to fade. That makes you worry about the quality of it, and whether it’s still doing its protective job. With ProGARM, I wash my kit 30 times or more, and it still looks great. It’s really durable and long-lasting and, as an added bonus, nothing needs ironing! We’ve found ProGARM brilliant to work with. From the kit itself, to the education side of things and the advice and support we receive from Dan and the team, ProGARM are a step above competitors.” – Paul Trotter, Crown Highways

What is an Arc Flash?

An Arc Flash occurs when an electrical discharge travels through the air and releases an intense burst of energy. This flash is capable of causing serious harm to anyone caught by it, so adequate Arc Flash protection is of the utmost importance. The energy expelled by an Arc Flash event can be deadly, with temperatures […]

Arc Flash certified PPE: Why test certification alone is not enough

Safety certification – such as EN 61482 for Arc Flash resistance – may be at the top of your list when selecting Arc Flash PPE, but test certification alone doesn’t guarantee your team’s safety. While it sets a helpful baseline, the environments and hazards employees encounter in the field are entirely different from one industry […]
